I never pass up an opportunity to dress for a holiday and the Fourth of July is one of my favorites. There’s nothing more baseball and apple pie than draping yourself in the stars and stripes. While there are no stars here, I’m a big fan of stripes for summer. I’ve lost count of how many navy and white striped “sailor” tee-shirts I own, so when I found the equivalent in dress form from J Crew, I instantly had to have it. As much as I love this unabashed celebration of America, I prefer a more subtle take on Fourth fashion. No flag motif here, but three very festive outfits – plus accessories, of course – that show my American pride.
We are lucky to have a beautiful lake in the middle of Austin that makes for fun outings whether there is a holiday or not, but combine the two and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to to don a nautical look to celebrate Independence Day! Here are some outfit inspo that are perfect for the Fourth no matter how you celebrate.
The aforementioned J Crew stripe dress with my classic Chuck Taylor converse sneaks is paired my a favorite summer tote from the late great Kate Spade (LOVE these similar customizable ones found on Etsy). I love the lobster embroidered onto the straw.
Next is a reversal of course with a red and white striped dress my mom recently snagged for me at JC Penny, by Liz Claiborne. I topped it with my super soft denim jacket, my Helen Kaminski straw fedora, and my navy and white Tom’s wedges. (I liked these so much I bought them in several colors… see the next outfit for the red ones). My HELLO SAILOR bag from Seabags is equal parts kitsch and practical. I love how sassy it is! Scored years ago on a trip to sunny California, it’s made out of sailcloth, so it’s water resistant and large enough to carry a beach towel, change of clothes and all the accountrements for a day on the water.
Finally, I love these chic high-waisted sailor pants in navy linen, also from J Crew several years ago (similar here and skirt option here). Paired with a red and white striped tank, my red Tom’s wedges and hat, I feel chic and festive all at the same time.
We wish everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July!
