No fashionista worth her salt doesn’t remember the “Politically Erect” episode of Sex and the City, where Carrie rocked a classic khaki shirtdress at a rally for her candidate. So when Ellen found this vintage Halston suede cloth version and I came across the modern interpretation at J. Crew, we knew we had to recreate the iconic outfit – flower brooch and all.
The classic shirtdress plays to both of our sense of classic style. The cuff, the collar, the belted waist. It’s as relevant today as it was on June Cleaver in the 1950s, or in the 1970s when our mothers sewed stacks of them out of Butterick patterns in every fabric imaginable. But Carrie’s dress – it’s classic khaki – the perfect neutral. Dress it up with heels, or down with Chuck Taylors, give a kick like we did here with suede over the knee boots, or pair it with sandals for summer. Any way you slice it, this dress has our vote.
